http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-subduction-zone.htm

This is a picture of a subduction zone. A subduction zone is where two tectonic plates collide. The plates are large, dense masses in the crust of the earth. They are constantly shifting and moving, so when they subduct, one pushes beneath the other one. Subduction zones can cause moutain ranges, ocean trenches, earthquakes and volcanoes.
