This is scoth broom, it is an invasive species that was intentionally brought to Vancouver island in the 1850s by a man coming from Scotland. It quickly spread up the coast of Vancouver island, into the Gulf islands and eventually made its way into the mainland where it has taken over. The problem with scotch broom is that it depletes the soil of water and nutrients and causes the death of species that are native to the area.
