Purple loosestrife

Purple loosestrife is an invasive perennial weed that was introduced into North America in the early 1800s. It is believed that it was introduced as a contaminant in European ship ballast and as a medicinal herb. It is highly agressive plant invader of wetlands. It can produce up to 2.7 million seeds per year, and spreads across approximately 480,000 additional hectares of wetlands each year. Ecosystems are upset by it, because local fauna do not eat the plant.
