This is a good example of an oxbox lake, an oxbox lake is where a portion of a river is cut off over time and leaves a uniquely shaped lake. Oxbox lakes occur when rivers begin to meander back and forth until eventually the water finds the path of least resistance and cuts off a segment of the original river.
